How to Plan the Perfect Timeline for an Outdoor Wedding
Organizing an outdoor wedding requires a special sensitivity to the movement of the sun. As a photographer, my job is to help you position the key moments at the right times:
- The Ceremony: Avoid thethe middle of the day (12:00 PM - 3:00 PM). The overhead sun creates deep shadows under the eyes and forces you and your guests to squint from the glare. The ideal time is about two hours before sunset: the light is warmer, and the shadows are longer and softer.
- The Cocktail Hour: While your guests enjoy a drink, the light begins to warm up. It is the perfect moment for candid shots among the crowd: people are relaxed, the sun is less aggressive, and the toasts are more photogenic.
- Couple Session: Just 15–20 minutes are enough, but they must be the "right" ones. During the Golden Hour, the light transforms your venue. It is a moment of relaxation, where you can finally breathe and enjoy your first moments as newlyweds, away from the chaos.
The "Plan B" factor for an outdoor wedding: Don't call it a compromise
Many couples live with the anxiety of rain. But from a photographic standpoint, a cloudy day is often an unexpected gift. The clouds act as a huge natural diffuser: the light is perfectly even, there are no harsh shadows on faces, and the colors of the flowers, the grass, and your decorations turn out much more saturated and vivid.
